Why the fruiting body

The fruiting body is the mushroom itself, the part that rises from the wood or the soil and the part people have gathered and eaten for centuries. Many mushroom products are made from mycelium, the root-like threads, often grown on grain.

Both of our extracts are made from the fruiting body and standardised to more than 30% beta-glucans. Beta-glucans are a family of polysaccharides found in the cell walls of mushrooms, and they are what the extracts are measured by.

01 Hericium erinaceus

Lion's mane

Lion's mane growing from the bark of a hardwood trunk

What it is

A white, shaggy mushroom whose soft spines hang down like a mane. It is cream when young and turns a warm yellow at the tips as it ages.

Where it grows

On the wounds of old hardwoods, often oak and beech. It grows in northern forests, from Asia to North America. It appears in late summer and autumn, often high on a living trunk.

How it has been used

Lion's mane has been eaten in China and Japan for centuries and has a long place in traditional Chinese practice, where it was taken as a tonic. In Japan it is called yamabushitake, after the tufted robes of the mountain monks.

Why it is in this gummy

We chose lion's mane for the head. It's the mushroom people reach for to stay clear through a long day of study or work, and friends kept telling us they'd swapped their second coffee for it. It's also the most studied of the mushrooms.

02 Cordyceps militaris

Cordyceps

Orange cordyceps militaris rising from moss on a forest floor
A hand holding fresh cordyceps militaris

What it is

A slender, bright orange mushroom, a few centimetres tall, that rises from the ground like a small flame.

Where it grows

In the wild it grows from the buried pupae of moths in forest soil and leaf litter, across Asia, Europe and North America. Today most cordyceps militaris is cultivated rather than gathered.

How it has been used

Cordyceps has been part of traditional Chinese and Tibetan practice for centuries, where it was valued as a tonic and kept in the drawers of medicine halls. Militaris is the cousin of the rarer high mountain species and is used in the same traditions, especially in China and Korea.

Why it is in this gummy

Cordyceps is for the body. Our weekdays run from long desk hours to sport after work, and we wanted one mushroom for each half. Neither is a stimulant, and doesn't get in the way of Marcus's espresso or Jade's tea.

How it's made

Our supplier grows the mushrooms until the fruiting body is mature, then harvests it.

The mushrooms are cleaned and dried, then ground down. Hot water draws out the polysaccharides, the compounds we chose them for. The liquid is filtered and slowly concentrated under vacuum at a low temperature. Then it's spray dried.

What's left is a fine powder, tested before it goes into our gummies. Two gummies hold 500mg of it.

What goes into a pouch

The difference is in the source

A mushroom extract can come from the fruiting body or the mycelium. They are not the same, and they do not cost the same.

What we use

Fruiting body

The mushroom itself, grown to maturity and then harvested. The part people have gathered and eaten for centuries. Both of our extracts come from it.

What we don't

Mycelium

The root-like threads beneath. Often grown on grain, so the powder can carry some of that grain with it. Gram for gram, it can hold less beta-glucan.

Two mushrooms, not ten. Many blends spread their total across five to ten species, so each gets a small share. We chose two, with intent. All 500mg goes to them.
